Courtesy of long-time backer Beege, here are six absolutely delicious cocktail recipes, one for each special lady in Light of my Life. Cheers!
Number 1 in a 6-part series of cocktails inspired by the characters of Light of my Life. This one is for Denise, and it's dedicated to her most striking feature. I'm calling this one "Pretty as a Peach"
Pretty as a Peach
3 ounces (~90ml) Orange Juice (I used bottled, fresh squeezed would be better)
1/2 oz (~15ml) Lemon Juice (definitely don't use bottled 🤢)
1 oz (~30ml) Cream of Coconut
3/4 oz (~20ml) Peach Brandy
1 1/2 oz (~45ml) light rum (I used Planteray 3 star but use what you got)
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice and shake until the shaker is frosty, then open pour into an old fashioned glass. Garnish with a lemon slice and a cherry and serve with a metal straw because Denise loves sea turtles.
Drinks of LOML part 2 of 6.
Macy was a difficult one to figure out, which I think is pretty appropriate since it's Macy. I put way more thought into this than I'm prepared to admit. At first, I planned on making something loud and aggressive - a boozy punch in the face.
And that would've been appropriate for Chapter One Macy I think, but the thing about Macy, and really everyone in LOML but I think Macy especially, is that she's undergone so much development over the course of the story. She's still fundamentally the same person, but she's found peace, and it's changed her. So I don't want to do a loud, boozy punch in the face anymore. I want to take something that maybe has a bit of a reputation, and give it an adult makeover.
To that end, here's the "Classy as Fuck" Margarita.
Classy as Fuck Margarita
1.5 oz (~45ml) Reposado Tequila
1.5 oz (~45ml) fresh lime juice
.75 oz (~20ml) Cointreau
.5 oz (~15 ml) agave syrup
pinch of salt
Fill a margarita glass or Old Fashioned glass with ice and set aside to chill. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake vigorously until the shaker is frosty. Strain into the glass over the fresh ice and serve with a lime wheel garnish.
Ordinarily I'd say to just use what you have, and you can obviously still do that, but the Cointreau is pretty important here because it's a tart, dry orange liqueur. If you use a Dry Curacao or Grand Marnier or Triple Sec, the balance of the cocktail will be different so keep that in mind and adjust accordingly. Similarly, adjust the agave syrup to your taste. The recipe as written gives you a balanced drink - not too sweet or too dry (in my opinion) but if you like a drier margarita, go with a quarter ounce. If you like your margarita the way you'd typically get it at a resort or Mexican restaurant, go with 3/4 oz.
The idea here is that the margarita is a fucking amazing drink that more often than not ends up being cheap and not very good. It's bad tequila, sweet and sour mix (yuck) and a salt rim (which personally, I'm not a big fan of doing). Instead, this is a grown-up drink with good, aged tequila and fresh ingredients.
It's Classy as Fuck. Like Macy.
Other than M&D, Sierra is my favorite character in Light of my Life. She's just the right mix of sweet and crazy with a healthy dose of daddy issues to keep things interesting.
Party girl Sierra doesn't get a cocktail, she gets a shot - something sweet and delicious and a little bit weird. In honor of her commitment to preserving her maidenhood, but still being down for a bit of fun, I'm calling this one The Loophole.
The Loophole
.5 oz (~30ml) Kahlua
.5 oz (~30ml) Bailey's Chocolate liqueur
.5 oz (~30ml) Chambord
Layer each liqueur in a shot glass, starting with the Kahlua, then the Bailey's, then the Chambord. Place the tip of a spoon at the surface of the Kahlua and pour the Bailey's very slowly over the back of the spoon. It should float on the Kahlua easily. Do the same with the Chambord, but it's probably going to mostly mix with the Bailey's. Oh well.
This turned out absolutely fucking delicious btw. Like dessert in a shot glass. That coffee/raspberry/chocolate combo works even better than I expected it to. Out of all the drinks I've made for this dumb little project, this one surprised me the most with how well it came out.
BTW, your shot glass doesn't have to have a cool little Evil Eye on it, but it helps.
Sarah is going to make a wonderful mother, don't you guys think? There's some sleepless nights ahead of her, but she has a warm, patient, nurturing temperament and I think she'll do just fine.
Obviously, Sarah's cocktail had to be dairy-based. I took the typical Milk Punch recipe and guided it into a Tiki direction, partially because I just like those flavors, and partially because the warm, Christmas spices of Angostura and allspice feel like a big, cozy hug. Here's "The Mother's Embrace"
The Mother's Embrace
2 oz (~60ml) whole milk
2 oz (~60ml) Half and Half
2 oz (~60ml) dark rum
.75 oz (~20ml) honey syrup (recipe follows)
.25 oz (~7ml) St. Elizabeth's Allspice Dram
2 dashes Angostura Bitters
a few drops of vanilla extract
Add all ingredients to a shaker and dry shake (without ice) for 10 seconds, until frothy. Add ice and shake until the shaker is frosty. Strain into an Old Fashioned glass over fresh ice, and garnish with ground nutmeg (or better yet, freshly grated nutmeg).
Honey syrup - 1:1 ratio of honey and water. Microwave for 30 seconds to loosen up the honey and stir or shake vigorously until the honey dissolves.
This is REALLY good, lads. A good cool weather, autumn drink. Reminds me a little bit of eggnog, without that dense, milkshakey texture that eggnog often has. You may want this a little sweeter than I've made it here, so just add another 1/4 oz or so of honey syrup. You can also substitute that with demerara syrup, simple syrup or even maple syrup if you want.
BTW, if you don't have the allspice dram, you can use a pinch of ground allspice instead. Or just skip it, it'll still be good without it.
Zarah was a tough nut to crack. She's a complex character - motherly and nurturing, sexually frustrated, mystical and mysterious, patient but assertive. She seems to be the defacto leader of the Coven and I wanted to try to lean into that. To that end, nothing says "double, double toil and trouble" to me quite like Absinthe.
A quarter ounce (~7ml) may not sound like much, but if you've ever had absinthe and especially if you're ever mixed it into a cocktail, you know it's VERY powerful stuff. The absinthe is singing lead in this drink, and it sounds like Type O Negative (Bloody Kisses, obviously) and black nail polish. Here's the High Priestess.
High Priestess
1.5 oz (35ml) Dark Rum
.5 oz (~15ml) Jamaican Rum
.25 oz (7ml) Absinthe
.5 oz (~15ml) Grenadine
.5 oz (~15ml) 2:1 Simple syrup or demerara syrup
.5 oz (~15ml) Lemon juice
.5 oz (~15ml) Lime juice
Add all ingredients to a shaker with crushed ice and shake until the shaker is frosty, then pour into an old fashioned glass and garnish with a lemon slice and cherry.
As always, use what you've got, but the loud, funky pop of a Jamaican rum is really nice here because it stands up to the bossiness of the absinthe. If you don't have anything like that, just use what you have and maybe back off a little bit on the absinthe. As little as a few drops will come through in the drink.
Also, this drink is lethally strong. Just what we need after a long day of leading a Coven.
Wrapping things up with Brooke. I really really like Brooke. In any other game, she might be my favorite girl. I can't say enough good things about her. She's fun, passionate, energetic and sexy. Work wouldn't be the same without the Asshole Bomber.
I wanted to make her a drink that reflected that fire and that passion that makes her such a great character. To me, that means cinnamon and passion fruit, which is a surprisingly delicious combination of flavors. And a shitload of rum helps too. Here's Burning Passion:
Burning Passion
1 oz (~30 ml) lime juic
1 oz (~30 ml) grapefruit juice
.5 oz (~15 ml) passion fruit puree
.75 oz (~22 ml) cinnamon syrup (recipe follows)
1.5 oz (~45 ml) dark rum
1.5 oz (~45 ml) Jamaican rum
5-6 dashes Angostura bitters
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with crushed ice and shake until the shaker is frosty. Pour into a Hurricane glass and top with more crushed ice, and garnish with a lime wheel.
Cinnamon syrup:
1 cup sugar
.5 cup water
3 cinnamon sticks
Bring everything to a boil in a small saucepan, reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let sit for 2 hours to steep, then strain into a jar and keep pretty much forever.
I need to buy more rum. This project just about cleaned me out.
This drink is absolutely delicious. Probably the best tasting one of the whole bunch. God this turned out so good. If you only make one of them, make this one.
